Recap by Shira Stern:

In the PNW, we know too well that April showers bring…more showers in May and June. The 2014 NW Regional tournament was, in the classic Northwest style, rainy, windy, and wet, and consequently very muddy.

Though conditions were drier on Saturday of the tournament, Element was given the challenge and opportunity to practice our game in windy conditions. We showcased our capability to fight through the varying…elements: putting up big hucks against Whitman’s tight man-defense and shredding Montana’s zone in the first two round of the weekend. In the final round of the day, we played Western, and came out on top 15-5 to qualify for Nationals!

The next morning, we rallied through the weekend’s weather uncontrollables to again take down an aggressive Western in semis to advance to the Regional finals. Our game against Oregon was another opportunity to grow and learn as a team, work on our variety of defensive strategies, and adjust to theirs. Though Oregon came out on top, that did not stop a strong Element squad (though missing a few key players to injuries) from taking second in the 2/3 match against Whitman. A great weekend of growth for Element 2014! Now, on to Cincinatties!

Cascadia Conference Championships, 2014

We really started to hit our stride during the Cascadia Conference Championships down in Eugene, Oregon. We ended up first in our Conference!

13-0 Washington B

11-10 Victoria

13-2 British Columbia

13-6 Victoria

15-9 British Columbia

Recap by Katie Meyer:

After a road trip down to Eugene on Friday, Element prepared for its first day of the college series. The morning began with a spirited game with our fellow purple and gold, Big Bang. Seeing such tenacity from our B team, especially while playing with only 9, pumped us up as we went into our second game against UVic. Thought there were complications with the time, both teams kept a competitive focus that carried over into our final game of the day with UBC. The stifling, assertive defensive line brought home our final win of the day. The following day was almost déjà vu, first with UVic in semifinals then with UBC in the finals. The sun was shining bright as so was Element as we played our  game. In a summary from coach, Kyle Weisbrod, (from before the tournament began), “We won some games; we lost some games; oh wait, we didn’t lose to anybody.” Those words rang true as we won over UBC and became the 2014 Cascadia Conference champions.

Northwest Challenge, 2014

Element hosted a tournament in Seattle for 12 elite college women’s teams. Competition was played for either two or three days with no championship bracket. We can’t wait to host another one next year!

15-8 Colorado

9-15 Oregon

12-8 Western Washington

10-7 UCLA

2-15 Ohio State

8-12 Whitman

14-6 Tufts

Recap by Kelley Hall:

The Northwest Challenge brought 20 of the top women’s teams together to tough out the rain, cold, and occasional sunshine. Our weekend started against Colorado where it felt like everything clicked, like the huge forehand huck from Michelle to Noelle. Later that evening we faced regional rivals Oregon under the lights. The showcase was our best game so far against Oregon with players like Grace and Miranda stepping up with huge layouts. Saturday we faced Western Washington, and we played a strong first half (8-3) with Barbara Hoover dominating the air. Our next game was against UCLA, who had somehow forgotten their raincoats. Flustered by the cold and our stifling defense we won the game easily. We ended by playing Ohio State who showed us what we still needed to be working on for the rest of the season. Sunday morning we faced Whitman in a close game that they pulled out. We ended the weekend against Tufts, with our best showing of the weekend with plays like Lucy’s gigantic layout block. Thank you to all of our volunteers who made the tournament run so smoothly, and if you are looking for pictures check out Tino Tran’s website.

Stanford Invite, 2014

After a lot of travel issues, Element finally made it down to Stanford for another top tier tournament!

12-8 UC Davis

9-10 Stanford

4-13 Oregon

12-8 Wisconsin

10-7 UC Berkeley

8-10 British Columbia

12-6 UC Davis

Recap by Sam Hing:

The weekend in Stanford was full of unpredictable weather and challenges.  We were welcomed by the occasional sunshine and the familiar Seattle rain showers.   With our Cheez-its and Runa in hand, we arrived at the fields excited to see our competition.  Element started the weekend on Saturday 2-2 with some challenging games against Oregon and Stanford.  Although our team groove felt off after the first day of the tournament, we spent Saturday evening reflecting on the day and the season thus far.  We learned a lot about what our team needs to succeed moving forward.  Sunday was our opportunity to get our familiar Element flow back and welcome the challenges ahead of us.  We focused on having higher energy, supportive sideline talk, and reliable reset dumps.  We finished Sunday 2-1.  We were able to show what we learned that weekend in our final game against UC-Davis.  Although the weekend tested us in ways we hadn’t been tested before, it showed us the areas in which we need to improve.  Back home in Seattle, we are ready to put in the work necessary to get us where we want to be.

Presidents’ Day Invite, 2014

We traveled down to San Diego, California to play against some of the top College teams in the nation! We ended up 3rd overall!

11-7 Arizona State

13-9 Whitman

12-8 UC San Diego

13-6 UC Santa Cruz

15-6 Michigan

12-11 Victoria

13-9 Whitman

12-6 UCLA

4-15 Oregon

15-8 Victoria

Recap by Noelle Takahashi:

This past weekend was filled with lots of fun and sun. We started out the weekend with one of our main values, DFAB, making sure everyone on the team made it to the tournament! Element dominated the fields undefeated 4-0 on Saturday and 2-0 on Sunday. Monday was a little rough with a semifinal loss to Oregon, but we learned a lot and it only made us want to work harder. We got our heads back in the game when we faced UVic for the second time that weekend and showed them that we were giving them a chance the day before. The weekend was spent working on our zone offense and defense, improving our sideline talk, and bringing the intensity to the fields. We proved that we know how to win the next five minutes and make other teams play our game. One of the best discoveries of the weekend was Element’s love for snacks such as Cheez-its (on and off the chest) and Hot Cheetos and Takis. With the Olympics on our minds we created the Olympic Airport Games on our way back to Seattle. We left San Diego with the determination we need to prepare for the Stanford Invite.

Miranda Moore, #2

Miranda

Miranda is currently a second year graduate student in the Public Health Department at UW.  She graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in Biology and a minor in History in 2012. Without the accent, it is hard to tell, but Miranda was originally born in Cambridge, UK.  She grew up and went to high school in New York City, New York.  Before throwing discs on the field, she was on the courts shooting hoops since the third grade.  You would never be able to tell from her awesome left-handed throws on the field, but Miranda describes herself as a secret couch potato.  She is a big fan of the TV shows, Jeopardy, Grey’s Anatomy, and Scandal.  Her top three movies are The Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, and Love Actually.  She is a huge board game nerd, always ready to play Pictionary and Cranium.  Ask her about any dog, because Miranda has the unique talent of having an encyclopedic knowledge of dogs.

Alysia Letourneau, #4

Alysia

A native of Everett, WA, Alysia is a captain of Element this season and has been playing on the team since her freshman year. She is now in her 5th year—“taking her victory lap,” as she likes to call it—studying bioengineering. She started playing Ultimate her sophomore year of high school because the mixed team needed more girls and has been tearing it up on the Ultimate field ever since. Besides her excellent skills in Ultimate, some of her other talents include touching her tongue to her nose, laughing at her own jokes, and looking bad ass in pig-tails. She also isn’t half bad at basketball, tennis, and soccer if this Ultimate thing doesn’t pan out. Just don’t ask her to imitate any accents because she will fail miserably. When she’s not in class or on the field, Alysia tutors other undergraduates in physics, catches up on TV shows like Orange is the New Black, and spends time searching for clothes on her bedroom floor (because closets are overrated anyway). Somehow, even though she’s the middle of three siblings, she has only played one game of monopoly in her entire life—a situation that may soon be remedied if the long-rumored team board game night comes to pass.

Barbara Hoover, #8

Barb

Oh Barb, where to begin. Barbara is a true Seattleite and is one of the many Nathan Hale High school Alums. This winter Barb left us to travel to Ecuador to do some casual boating, learn about turtles, learn to scuba dive and put us all to shame with her tan. While there, she fell in love with turtles and now likes them more than she likes people. Although, she came back as if she never left, and since then has been on something we like to call ‘the Barb workout plan’.  If you come to a game, you can either find Barb hanging out at deep deep, or casually catching a huck from one of our fantastic O line handlers after she has easily blown past her defender. She also knows how to EAT, as the rest of the elements, but she avoids gluten because if she has it, she will swell up like a balloon and float away! So, the easiest way to her heart is make her a gluten free brunch of eggs and potatoes!

Michelle Herman, #9

Michelle

Michelle Herman is a senior on Element and has been playing frisbee for five years. She was born and raised in the Seattle area and is currently in the top-ranked nursing program here at UW, which includes some crazy scheduling! Michelle played tennis in middle school, and was active in her high school’s debate club. She says that starting frisbee five years ago was a big switch, but It is clear to all of us on Element that Michelle is driven by that competitive spirit! She is so dedicated to her activities and it really shows in her abilities both on and off the frisbee field. As a player on Element, she has some of the steadiest hands and is always calm, cool, and collected. And speaking of cool, Michelle was on the cover of True Girl magazine at the young age of 16! She really is a force to be reckoned with and is always our go to girl for medical advice. We on Element are truly lucky to play with her and we can’t wait to see where she ends up!

Shira Stern, #10

Shira

Where do I even start with this girl? Shira Stern is a crazy athlete, committed teammate, quick decision maker, and a force to be reckoned with on the field.  A senior at the University of Washington this year, Shira is a Seattleite born-and-bred.  She attended Nathan Hale high school in north Seattle along with several other Element players and helped their ultimate program flourish.  Shira is an Economics major minoring in Environmental Science.  When she is not out on the ultimate field Shira can be found biking, reading, or hanging out at Greenlake.  Shira was coerced into playing ultimate at Salmon Bay Middle School and has been hooked ever since (we thank whoever coerced her every day). This year, Shira is one of Element’s captains and she consistently brings her positive attitude and vast experience to practice. This past summer Shira was one of the women selected to represent the United States of America at U23 worlds.  Her handler skills and quickness downfield helped that team earn the gold!  Her U23 coach, Mike Whitaker (Whit) was a mentor for her throughout her time with Team USA.  Whit helped Shira to realize the importance of friendships and connections with teammates that extend off the field.  Shira is truly a well-rounded player.  She is more than reliable in the handler set, frequently making game changing plays, and is scary as a downfield player. Off the field, Shira is a dedicated teammate and friend.  She is committed to our sport and always searching for ways to improve.  Shira is an inspiration.

Nora Landri, #11

Nora2

Nora “Lance” Landri, hails from the windy city that is known for Kanye, deep dish pizza and the mirrored bean. Often found juicing or with a box of Cheeze-its this girl epitomizes fun and good spirit. One of her most embarrassing moments was while getting her hair cut the brush broke in her self-loathed hair, creating her very own Princess Diaries moment. In her past life before Ultimate she was a State Champion on bars in gymnastics. She has more medals than you would have ever thought possible! You might be surprised to find out that this is only Nora’s second year playing Ultimate. If you want to know where Nora is, there is a good chance she is studying for her Public Health classes in the Glass Box.

Lucy Williams, #12

Lucy

Lucy Williams is a native of Seattle who is enjoying her fifth and final year with Element. Lucy has been playing Frisbee since middle school and continued to play in high school at Lakeside (alongside teammate Kelley Hall) where she also was involved in volleyball and lacrosse. This coffee enthusiast is known for her commanding presence on the D line as a handler, her above average hucks, and unsurmountable endurance. Currently, Lucy is coaching the University Prep JV boys’ team for the first time and loves it. When not playing Frisbee, she absolutely loves to bike… everywhere (including through 9 states to date). If you need help with math or just want to discuss anything with numbers, Lucy is your girl! She is pursuing a double major that includes Applied Computational Mathematical Sciences and Community, Environment, and Planning.

Katie Meyer, #13

Katie

Katie Meyer, a Cincinnati native stepped onto the ultimate field after a lifetime of soccer supremacy where she earned State first team honors. Her quiet intensity before games lets her get into her zone, where she often dreams of stealing Vickie’s secret (not so secret talent) of indestructibility. Off the field she spends time baking and decorating her very own “Katie’s Kakes”. No matter how many times she has moved she still finds that wherever her family and friends are is where her home is. If you need to find Katie, there is a high likelihood that she is running around the halls of Paccar where she is the Director of Philanthropy for the University of Washington Undergraduate Women in Business (UWIB).

Nicole Cramer, #14

Nicole

Nicole ‘Hot Cheetos’ Cramer is one half of the infamous duo Hot Cheetos and Takis. Hailing from Auburn, WA she is a sophomore biology major who also is considering a nutrition minor and is potentially pre-PT. Her pre-PT skills often come in handy when teammates need elbows and thumbs taped up before practice. Nicole started playing Frisbee this year when her roommate and second-year Element player Nora Landri convinced her to give it a try. Boy are we thankful, as Nicole’s speed and athleticism from cross country, track, and basketball helped her pick up the game quickly and dominate over opponents. Her height and speed make her a scary opponent both on the mark and in the air. Nicole’s skills extend beyond the athletic realm. She is well versed in all things football and brings that BEAST MODE mentality to everything she does, including trap shooting.  Where Lynch has Skittles, Nicole has peanut butter and banana bagels, Gatorade, goldfish, and Cheez-its. She also recently celebrated her birthday on Pi Day and enjoyed many delicious pies!

Kate Wilburn, #16

Kate

You would never guess that Kate Wilburn, Element’s sole freshmen, is the youngest on the squad. Though she began her ultimate career a mere  ten weeks ago, Kate has already established herself as an impact player, capable of running offensive sets and punishing opposition with her speed and grit. She is quickly developing field awareness and veteran disc-discipline, while upping her throwing repertoire with each practice. While her background in soccer (twelve years!) gives her an edge athletically, it is her contagious desire to learn and good natured, competitive attitude that make her a top-notch pick-up for Element’s 2013/2014 squad. Outside of ultimate, Kate enjoys singing, particularly musical theater (one of her childhood and current hobbies). She can also be found biking, practicing yoga, and running sprint intervals when she isn’t crushing on the frisbee pitch.  To keep fueled up, Kate feasts on sushi, her favorite food. A classic athlete, she prepares for big games with lots of stretching and hydration. Kate is currently choosing between a degree in either nursing or public health. We can’t wait to see where lil’ Kate goes on and off the field while at UW!! Keep your eyes on this young’un, she is going big places.

Vickie Su, #17

Vickie

Vickie Su, commonly known as Lil Vick is a blast on and off the field and another memorable personality that makes this squad so amazing! Before settling down in Vancouver (Washington thank goodness) Vickie spent time living in Wisconsin, New Jersey and Seaside Oregon. Her sport of choice before discovering her Ultimate calling was Tennis. Although she would have liked to play basketball, her parents worried about her aptitude for “hitting the ground” and discouraged it. Vickie’s extended family all live in Taipei, Taiwan and she travels there once every couple years to visit. Her favorite part of Taiwan is quite clearly the food, namely stinky tofu…smells terrible but tastes great according to Lil Vick! Vickie explored the country as a kid and has done the same with academic disciplines in college, testing Physics, Computer science, Economics and Chemistry before deciding on Biology and Math majors. To blow off steam from such demanding schoolwork, Vick reminisces about her favorite animal, undoubtedly a penguin. Along these same lines, Vick loves animated movies such as Frozen and Tangled and when she craves a pull on the old heartstrings, she flips on an episode of The Biggest Loser. Vickie can fall frequent and hard and not shed a tear, but absolutely cannot hold it together when it comes to the Biggest Loser. Vickie started playing Frisbee her freshman year after being persuaded by a friend. She hasn’t been able to quit since. Vickie loves the welcoming vibes she has encountered from the ultimate community and feels that the friends and role models she has obtained from her experiences on both Big Bang and Element are absolutely one of a kind. Vickie loves ultimate and ultimate loves her!!

Alli Tjader, #18

Alli

Alli Tjader (pronounced Jader) comes to Element from the sunny land of Los Altos, California (she says she likes Seattle weather better though!). Off the field, Alli is a sophomore in the Psychology major with a minor in Diversity. You would never know this is her first year playing Frisbee from her casual playing style, deeming her “Casu-Alli”. She played competitive soccer and field hockey in high school, so she isn’t new to team sports, although this is the first one where she has to use her hands! However, you can’t tell because of all her sick grabs in the air and impressive field awareness. Her positive attitude and calm on and off the field is always appreciated along with her exceptional pie baking skills! She is a great asset to this Element team, despite her odd hatred of lettuce! If this girl is this good after only seven months of playing, you just know she is going places!

Grace Noah, #20

Grace Noah Headshot

Keep your eyes on #20 when you’re watching Element because you never know when she’ll make a huge play! This is sophomore Grace Noah’s 9th year playing ultimate, and it clearly shows with her field awareness and offensive prowess. Whether she’s shredding zone defenses or skying top ultimate players to bring down goals, Grace is a force to be reckoned with on the field. But she’s not just a great player, she is also a great teammate and friend. She is always there with a smile or word of encouragement when the going gets tough, and she also has the frisbee work ethic equivalent to a wall street banker, even after she was diagnosed with stress fractures half-way through the season. Off the frisbee field, Grace played basketball for most of her life, and is also very musically talented. She plays guitar, piano, sings, and once played a concert at the Experience Music Project in front of 1000 people!

Cami Canter, #21

Cami

Cami (short for Camille) Canter is a sophomore double majoring in Comparative History of Ideas and Political Science and is also pre-law. She’s lived in Seattle since she moved from La Jolla, CA when she was two and has been playing frisbee since sixth grade. When she’s not playing frisbee she enjoys climbing, singing, talking politics, and nurturing her love of cheese. To prepare for games she eats Nutella and raspberry jam on a bagel and listens to the Les Miserables soundtrack to pump her up (which makes sense because she speaks fluent French!). Her favorite workout is hill sprints and she also ran cross country and played basketball in high school. Cami dominates on the frisbee field with her expert handling skills. She’s an incredible asset to the team and a ton of fun to play with!

Sarah Edwards, #22

Edwards

Sarah Edwards, aka Ward, is one of our awesome captains for this year!  Born and raised in Seattle, Ward, who is now a junior, has played Ultimate since 6th grade and brings valuable experience to Element. Upon talking to her, it’s clear that she absolutely loves Ultimate and the spirit of the game. She values the respect and integrity that Frisbee players exhibit and enjoys watching players develop.  One day, she hopes to participate in Ultimate Peace in the Middle East, which is an Ultimate Frisbee camp designed to utilize Ultimate as a tool for building friendship, trust, and leadership. Outside of Frisbee, Ward enjoys playing the piano and even played the fiddle when she was young!  Her dream job used to be becoming a performance pilot for the Blue Angels, but then someone told her that only men could do it.  That’s okay though, because she has developed a passion for social justice, having already traveled to El Salvador three times through her church, and is now majoring in law, societies, and justice. Ward is an amazing teammate with a huge heart.  Aside from being a nanny for four kids, she and her family also fosters kittens for the Seattle animal shelter.  Sarah Edwards exhibits the qualities valued in Ultimate, both on and off the field, and we are definitely thankful to have her on Element.

Molly Boyd, #25

Molly

Molly Boyd has the speed of a cheetah and the mental capacity of a cheetah. She runs like one and she thinks like one, so she must be one. A terrifying opponent in both her catching and throwing skills!  She played 4 years of UW D1 NCAA soccer but she finally found her true calling and love with Element! Boyd occasionally wears bathing suit bottoms in place of underwear and watches people while she eats.  She only likes people who like her and would like to travel to Australia and then around the world in 80 days, what a sense of adventure! A fan of Greys Anatomy, who likes to pretend she knows things about medicine from all of the “training” and will diagnose peoples illnesses for free.  She has a great smile, pristine feet, and a heart of gold! Call 425-555-9945 for a long walk on the beach.

Georgia Seyfried, #36

Georgia

Meet Georgia Seyfried! Hailing from Boise Idaho, this Element’s dedication and fun-loving sense of humor have made her a great addition to the team. A basketball player in high school, she came to UW wanting to try something new in college so she joined ultimate with some of her floor mates. You’d never know that she has only been playing for three years. Her poise with the disc and forehand hucks set her apart on offense while her height and long arms make her an intimidating matchup on defense. Off the field Georgia certainly knows how to lead a full life. Majoring in Biology with a focus in conservation, evolution and ecology keeps her busy but she also finds time to work in a research lab and volunteer with Science STARS in Seattle elementary schools where she can nurture her interest in teaching. She also had the opportunity to spend this past summer at Mt Hood working as a forest service intern where had ample time for reading, playing guitar, running, and weekend trips to Portland. She even got to dress up as Smokey the Bear a couple of times! On the field as well as off the field, Georgia is dedicated and passionate about what she does.

Bailey Kilmer, #37

Kilmer

Bailey “Kilmer” Kilmer is a junior majoring in Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington. She is the Vice Wing commander of the Air Force ROTC. Her favorite food might be raisins even if she says she hates it. She also loves Gatorade, bananas, smoothies, and Gatorade banana smoothies. Bailey has her scuba license and likes to ride sharks for fun. She also loves animals, especially dogs, and has a pet rat that can do cool tricks like ride a tiny bicycle. One time Bailey jumped out of a helicopter to save people who were nearly drowning. She also knows how to speak a click click language, which she learned from her dad. Bailey is the best teammate anyone could ask for and buys socks for those who have holes in theirs.

Amanda Kostic, #47

Kostic

Amanda Kostic, a Seattle native is playing in her final college season. Often joking about being born in the wrong place, this country lovin’, dirt bike ridin’, guitar playin’ super senior decided to stay in Seattle to play Frisbee as opposed to moving to the East coast to play soccer. She is the pogo-stick jumping record holder at her elementary school, where she also played Ultimate for the first time. You might have also noticed many of her superstitions, including tying her shoes once before each half, the green and yellow Australia sweatband, and most notably the blue Nathan Hale hat. Conveniently housing both of her majors, Germanics and Anthropology, Kostic can most likely be found in Denny Hall.

Kelley Hall, #67

Kelley

After spending four years as a Whitman Sweet, helping to build a successful women’s ultimate program there and majoring in Geology and Physics, Kelley has returned to her hometown of Seattle to attend UW. Here, pursuing a PhD in Earth and Space Science with a focus in Seismology, and can often be found with a Pacific NW Seismic beeper on hand, monitoring seismic activity in the area. We’re all stoked that she has found time to use her last year of college ultimate eligibility to play with UW Element! Kelley began playing ultimate in middle school and has been hooked every since. Her favorite food is pasta, she studied abroad in Germany, and she was an RA in college. Kelley’s high ultimate IQ, accurate throws, and consistent playing have made her an important part of our offensive handling set this year. But she is also an important contributor off the field, epitomizing DFAB and heading our team Cheez-It sponsorship push.

Noelle Takahashi, #99

Noelle

Noelle Chizuko “Cheez-it-girl” Takahashi is a fourth year student at the University of Washington. She is from the island Maui, where she grew up on the beach, as a part time hula dancer. She is studying Electrical Engineering to fulfill her life long dream of getting rich and growing old. Noelle stumbled upon Ultimate when she stumbled onto the IMA field and got hit by a Frisbee. In anger, she threw it as far as she could. That was when she discovered her hidden talent. When Noelle is not playing Frisbee, she enjoys crushing little kids at Lazer tag with her mom.  Little known fact, Noelle has a fake front tooth from an incident involving Lazer tag and bubble tea; another thing she loves. Boys, the key to this girl’s heart is Phad Thai. The anti-key, on the other hand is McDonalds. Not even the fries.
